Abstract:

Spadella interestitialis sp. nov. (Chaetognatha) was found in the Mediterranean Sea in samples of shallow sublittoral calcareaous sands down to a sediment depth of 10 cm. The formal description is followed by a discussion of structural and taxonomic relations to other Spadella species including another meiobenthic dwarf species from Japanese sites. The possible significance of specific structures for life in the interstitial system is considered.
