Outline of the Advanced Field Course**

This 3-weeks module consists of two parts: In the first half the participants strengthen their capabilities in SCUBA diving, with emphasis on diving as a scientific method in bio- and geosciences. It starts with a 10-days intensive course for advanced divers. During the full-day program the students are trained in three specialties: Rescue, Navigation and Deep Diving including the preparaton for the 2-Star-Silver-Diver exam. The training follows the regulations of EU standards (EN14153-3/ISO24801-3 - Level 3, part I) and is certified by the German Association of Diving Instructors (VDTL e.V./cedip) and the German Association of Sports Divers (VDST/CMAS).

After having successfully passed the 2-Star Diver exam the students join the well-approved course "Methods of Underwater Research" which since 1996 more than 200 young scientists had been attending. The course provides the unique possibility to learn the planning, preparation and safe realization of a scientific project under water step by step. Safety is one of the main topics, so risk assessment and prevention play a significant role. During training dives the participants fulfill tasks of increasing complexitiy to learn the use of various sampling techniques, the use of measuring tapes, ropes and grids as well as the handling of heavy loads and lifting devices. For documentation and data gathering writing slates, photo and video cameras are introduced. The results are assembled in an illustrated final report and a video clip. This hands-on course provides students with the relevant tools to plan, safely conduct and successfully accomplish their own underwater research project within their personal limits.

The students are requested to record and document their observations and measurements in the field and in the lab in order to produce a final report.
