SCUBA diving plays a special role for marine biology classes, field trips and research projects at the HYDRA Institute for Marine Sciences. Through the SCUBA training for beginners (Open Water Diver), which is the part of all our marine biology courses, now several thousand students and researchers were introduced to SCUBA diving as a research method. When developing the curriculum "Marine Biology Diving Skills" for students of bio- and geosciences in collaboration with the University of Tübingen, the demand for the extension of the dive training on an advanced level was created.

This compact course for advanced divers includes three diving specialties (rescue, navigation, deep diving) and the exam for the Master Diver (2-Star diver, cedip/CMAS**) to introduce the participant to autonomous diving and the accomplishment of scientific projects underwater.

Boris Unger is a trained biologist and teacher, co-founder of the HYDRA Institute for Marine Sciences, diving instructor and underwater photographer. Boris lead diving operations in the sea, in lakes and in rivers for a variety of scientific projects. Moreover he is ROV operator. He is particularly excited about challenges to find easy and practical solutions for difficult underwater tasks.

 

 

 

  

Dr. Miriam Weber is a diving instructor and underwater photographer. Miriam took part in several scientific expeditions to Antarctica, the tropics, the Mediterranean Sea and to high-alpine lakes. She is coordinating the research activities at the HYDRA Institute for Marine Sciences and has a teaching appointment at the University of Tübingen. Contents of the course

The aim of the course is to strengthen the diving skills that were learned in the beginners' training and their extension in the field of rescue, deep diving and underwater orientation through appropriate specialty courses. The course concludes with an exam for VDTL Master Diver (VDTL/cedip**) or equivalent VDST Silver (VDST/CMAS**). The training follows the regulations of EU standards (EN14153-3/ISO24801-3 - Level 3, part I).
This full-day program is intensely focused on diving and includes theory lessons, dry practice and 14 SCUBA dives. There is no marine biology program held parallel!

 
 

Specialty Rescue

The prevention of diving accidents through risk assessment and the use of various preventive measures are the main objectives in this specialty. Students learn to recognise possible causes of diving accidents and the basics of emergency management. They practice different rescue techniques in and on the water.

Specialty Navigation

The reasonable planning and safe execution of an autonomous SCUBA dive with a partner of the same training level is practiced in this specialty. Furthermore, different techniques of navigation under water are objectives of this course.

 
 
 

Specialty Deep Diving

The participants' attention is focused on the particular conditions and risks
during deep diving. They learn how to plan and safely perform deep dives (up to 40 m) independently.

Exercises and examination for VDTL/VDST ** diver

The theoretical basics of diving physics, diving medicine, diving equipment and dive planning are repeated and reinforced. During the complex practical training, the participants learn about dealing with simulated incidents such as loss of fins, loss of buoyancy, failure of air supply for themselves or their buddies.

 
   
 

Thematic priorities

Risk assessment and applying appropriate measures to avoid or reduce risks.

Dealing with risks inherent in diving and from the environment (boat, shore, scientific equipment).

Rescue and diving accident management.

Autonomous diving: planning, implementation, limits.

Orientation/navigation under water, leading a group of divers.

Special risks of deep diving, oxygen toxicity, nitrogen narcosis, psychological factors, general diving rules and common mistakes.

Practical training for safe handling of equipment, leading a group of divers, dealing with simulated incidents, self- and partner rescue.

Special conditions of scientific diving.

 
 
 

Prerequisites

1-Star-Diver certificate or equivalent (Open Water Diver).

Minimum 17 logged dives between 10 and 30 m after passing 1-Star-Diver test.
(Note: If you participate in the entire module "Advanced Field Course" take 9 logged dives between 10 and 30 m after passing 1-Star-Diver test as a prerequisite).

Current dive medical certificate with clear statement "fit for SCUBA diving" (no restrictions). Validity: persons under 18 or over 40 years of age: 1 year; persons from 19 to 39 years old: 3 years. A standard form can be requested by e-mail.

Spending all day outdoors at the Mediterranean with heat, sun, wind and seawater can be quite strenuous, especially in summer. General good physical fitness is requested.

 

Requirements for a graded certificate/ECTS

  • After the successful participation under the following conditions a graded certificate will be issued:
  • Regular attendance of all course events
  • Short presentation
  • Successfully passed examinations of the three specialties and the VDTL/VDST ** diver
  • This course is recommended for evaluation with 3 credit points

10 nights in group apartments, dormitory-style (self-catering), 8-day course with 14 SCUBA dives and full diving gear rental. Examination fees.

Note

The training for advanced divers is part of the module "Marine Biology Diving Skills - Advanced Field Course **". The second part, where you get trained in scientific diving, is the course "Methods of Underwater Research"
